Dawn Grimes Myers is a native of Queens, New York. Her family moved first to Mt. Clemens, Michigan, then to Los Angeles, California when she was eight years old.

Early on my parents recognized my artistic abilities and encouraged me in every way possible. I always had a ready supply of paints, pencils and pastels along with paper and canvas. When it came time for gift giving my parents encouraged me to paint a picture or design something original.

Music was also encouraged and Dawn played clarinet from third grade through high school.

Dawn holds a BFA from UCLA School of Design with a minor in film. One of her professors recognized a natural ability for architectural design and recommended she consider a career in that field. However, her artistic journey led her to clothes and jewelry design in addition to creating a line of multi-cultural dolls which were later sold through Nordstrom.

My inspiration as an artist comes from everywhere. I have always loved architecture and I have a passion for the history behind different buildings. Part of the fun for me is learning the special meanings that different structures hold for different people.

When I originally spotted a stone that reminded me of a building I went with my “gut” and started painting on it! Since then I have been requested to paint many buildings, including a courthouse, a Chino Dairy, the 18th hole at a Country Club and a family farm in Kansas. Often, a family moving from one home will have me paint it so they can take it to their new home. I try and capture the spirit of the home and I enjoy including all of the special details that make it unique.

The beauty and solidity of the stone just seems to fit the idea of a structure. I feel more at home painting on stone than on any other surface. I plan on continuing this wonderful journey. There is no end to the places I want to paint and I meet the nicest people along the way!

Dawn is also actively involved in community organizations including, the Claremont Arts Committee, and the Claremont Banner Committee. She is also a Board member for the Claremont Community Foundation and for the Claremont American Red Cross.
